Architect Niloufar Tajeri and philosopher Gal Kirn will talk about their exhibition project “Thinking a Monument to Sub/Urban Riots” at the Schloss Solitude that connected two phenomena which at first glance do not fit well together: the monument, which is defined as something that builds collective memory and organizes social consensus; and the riot, which is seen as something violent and destructive towards all sacred pillars of society. But once approached theoretically, the history of both monument and riots reveals itself to be much more conflicting. Accordingly, the exhibition argued there might be a way to bring the two notions into a productive dialogue. In their lecture, Tajeri and Kirn will revisit the task to commemorate riots on the more recent catastrophic event of Grenfell Tower. How to think, perhaps even invent new monumental forms and practices to narrate the complex visible and invisible forms of state violence, while also affirming riots as political and collective forms of action?
